Safran Data Systems expands in India

In August 2022, Captronic Systems, an Indian company renowned for its expertise in the defense, space and automotive industries, became part of Safran Data Systems. The acquisition is a great opportunity for both companies. Here’s why…

Sixty years after joining the space adventure, India is now one of the world’s leading players. It has seen significant growth in recent years, with a number of exploration programs supported by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), the country’s space agency.

Established more than 20 years ago, Captronic Systems is based in Bangalore, Chennai, Pune and Thiruvananthapuram. The company has a team of over 100 experts in systems engineering, radiofrequency, digital signal processing, instrumentation and testing. This expertise is of real interest to Safran Data Systems, a subsidiary of Safran Electronics & Defense, which quickly identified synergies between the two companies.

Captronic Systems specializes in simulation and RF-based testing, while Safran Data Systems is recognized for its know-how in Earth-space telemetry and communication systems. Together, they’ll offer an extended range of joint solutions, with a stronger local presence and high-quality customer service.

A host of synergies and opportunities

In short, Safran Data Systems can now expand its operations in India while Captronic Systems will sell its systems in Europe.

Noël Ballot, sales and marketing director at Safran Data Systems, explains: “With this acquisition, we’ll be able to increase our market share and further improve our customer service in India. This local presence will also help us operate more effectively in the South Asian market. Captronic Systems has achieved significant growth in its historic markets in India, so we can capitalize on the know-how of their teams to develop, integrate, adapt and support our products for the Asian markets. Safran will also benefit from Captronic’s expertise in automated test equipment engineering, validation and integration. Eventually, we can expand this new approach beyond the Asian continent.”

Captronic Systems teams share this vision, as noted by Vinod Mathews, CEO and founder of Captronic Systems: “Joining a large group like Safran gives us an enhanced profile with our customers. And our ability and confidence to undertake larger projects is strengthened by the Group’s many resources.”

“I joined Captronic Systems in 2003 as an administration manager. I handle all administrative tasks for the company across our locations in India, including managing travel for our people, both in India and internationally. I’m really pleased to have joined Safran and to discover new ways of working, since we had limited international exposure. In particular, it fosters opportunities to collaborate with new customers in India and the Asia-Pacific region.”

“I joined Captronic Systems 22 years ago. I first set up the Engineering department, then the Project Management department. Today, I’m Chief Technology Officer and I lead systems integration projects informed by our R&D work. Projects focus on radiofrequency, real-time simulation (hardware-in-the-loop) and automated tests and measurements for our customers in aerospace and defense. Joining Safran will push us to reach the Group’s standards in systems development and customer commitment, which is a great challenge! It will also help us grow faster. Our goal is to become a major center of expertise for automated test equipment within Safran.”
