The massive support for the COP26 meeting in November 2021 reflected the extent and the urgency of the transition needed to tackle climate change.

Over and above Safran’s major efforts to decarbonize aviation, with products offering increasingly higher performance, we have already started the transformation of our production facilities and processes. Our Low Carbon Plan initially targeted a reduction in emissions from our offices and facilities, with decreased energy consumption. All of our companies are now fully mobilized to reduce 2018 levels by 30% by 2025. This pace is in line with the target of limiting global warming to no more than 1.5°C, in relation to the pre-industrial era.

The climate emergency means we have to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon world, for instance by systematically integrating climate challenges in all corporate decisions and in all job fields. Starting in 2022, both facilities management and production departments at all Safran sites will deploy an energy management system that makes reduced energy consumption a central concern. Of course, our carbon footprint is not just due to our products, some of it also comes from emissions by our suppliers. Other actions will shortly be announced to reduce emissions caused by shipping and business travel.

Many of you are already aware of the climate challenge and have started taking action. Two developments largely reflect this attitude: the success of the new Low Carbon category in the Safran Innovation Awards, and a multitude of practical initiatives, some described in the following pages.

It’s only by working together as a team that we can shape Safran’s answer to the climate challenge.
