Space of tomorrow: colleagues tell their stories

Being part of the space business of the future requires colleagues to train, innovate, work together and provide mutual support around the world. We hear from three of them…

Constant Ndjab

Production engineering project manager (space) at Safran Electrical & Power

I started at Safran as an automation technician. Two decades later, I have a dual role. I’m in charge of the compact wiring harness product line. But my main job is production engineering project manager for the wiring harnesses for ONE Sat at Safran Electrical & Power. This is the first time we’ve been involved in an in-orbit reconfigurable satellite, developed by Airbus Defence & Space. It’s a major project for our division and the Villemur plant, where we’ve set up special cleanrooms to meet the stringent cleanliness requirements. I’m delighted to be in this role, which involves multiple disciplines. I rely on the wide-ranging expertise of colleagues to make the best decisions for the project.

“I’m in charge of engineering activities for Safran Engineering Services in Spain. When our customer asked us to work on the world’s largest satellite, we were all enthusiastic at the prospect. We had to devise, develop and test a new mechanical engineering solution to allow the satellite to deploy in space. It was a daunting challenge. Starting from scratch, we needed the right idea. Next, we had to make it happen, given the incredibly short lead times imposed by NewSpace companies today. We also had to manage customer relations with a fast developing entity. And we did it! In December 2022, the satellite was deployed right before our eyes. The American, Mexican and Spanish teams on this program were like kids waiting for Santa Claus. We were relieved, delighted and proud to be part of a world first. Building on this experience, we foresee new collaborations and innovations for the space of tomorrow.”

“I’ve been working as a mechanical engineer at Safran Engineering Services Chihuahua for two years. I was fully involved in the low-Earth orbit satellite project. We usually work on airplanes and helicopters, so the team was excited to venture into the space sector. We had to train in Mexico and Spain, work together and help each other. It was a huge success. On launch day, all the Chihuahua teams were eager to know the result of the deployment operation and were delighted to have been part of such an adventure. It has opened whole new horizons for us!”
